Saying "Thank You" To God

Psalm 9:1 - “I will give thanks to the LORD with all my heart; I will tell of all Your wonders.” Typically when we want to thank God, we pray and list all the things we are thankful to Him for. Certainly, this is a good thing (Philippians 4:6; Luke 9:15-19). However, in the prayers of thanksgiving recorded in the psalms, the psalmists rarely, if ever, say the words “thank you” to God. Nor do they say “I am thankful for” and then rattle off a list of items. Instead, they say “thank you” to God by telling others what He has done for them (cf. Psalm 9:1,14; 34:1; 66:16)!

Telling others about what God has done for us is more powerful than just saying “thank you.” After all, sometimes we say “thank you” more out of a sense of obligation than genuine thankfulness. However, when we tell others about what God has done, it shows Him we want to thank Him and we want others to know how wonderful He is (Psalm 34:3)! Also, it takes great humility to admit to others that God has done things for us we could not possibly do for ourselves. Finally, admitting to others that God has blessed us demonstrates our faith that God is active in the lives of His people! Have we ever thought, “How can I possibly say ‘thank you’ to God for Christ’s sacrifice?” The answer is clear: tell others (Mark 5:20)!
