A Bible Full of Treasure

“I read somewhere of a Scots lady whose son moved to America where he became a multi-millionaire.  She lived in abject poverty hidden away in the wild highlands; away from larger towns and cities.  The people around her couldn’t understand why her boy left her living in such poverty when he was so rich.  She couldn’t understand it either.  When they asked her about it she was evasive:  ‘But he sends me pretty pictures all the time!’ she said.  ‘Would you like to see them?’  Of course they would.  She took down the huge family Bible and thumbed through its pages taking out the ‘pretty pictures’ as she went.  There they were, scores upon scores of hundred dollar bills.  She had a Bible full of treasure and was still living in utter poverty.  ‘How foolish!’ we say.  True.  We’d never live in such poverty with a Bible full of treasure, would we?” (“The Book of Romans,” Jim McGuiggan, p. 436)

We don’t always appreciate the luxury we hold leather-bound in our possession.  “The law of Your mouth is better to me than thousands of gold and silver pieces.” (Ps. 119:72).  In our Bibles, we access “all the wealth that comes from the full assurance of understanding, resulting in a true knowledge of God’s mystery, that is, Christ Himself, in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.” (Col. 2:2-3).  May we never overlook such treasure.
