Who’s Our Tag Team Partner?
Confession: as a kid, I loved to watch wrestling. Not Olympic wrestling, but the fully scripted drama of the WCW and WWF. Please don’t think less of me (cf. 1 Cor. 13:11). In tag team matches, one wrestler would weaken his opponent, maybe with a suplex or piledriver, then tag in his partner to come finish him off with a high flying rope smash. Jesus accused the Pharisees of being in a tag team match with their wicked ancestors against God’s prophets. “Woe to you! For you build the tombs of the prophets, and it was your fathers who killed them. So you are witnesses and approve the deeds of your fathers; because it was they who killed them, and you build their tombs.” (Luke 11:47-48).
The Pharisees thought they were righteous for building beautiful memorials to the prophets of old. They adorned them and said, “If we had been living in the days of our fathers we would not have been partners with them in shedding the blood of the prophets.” (Matthew 23:29-30). Oh the irony! They had the same hard hearts as their fathers before them, so Jesus says they are partners with them! They’re in an extended tag team match. Their fathers did the killing, then tagged the Pharisees in to build their tombs! Who is our tag team partner? Have we been tagged in to continue the legacy of our wicked forefathers in the Bible? Or have we been tagged in by Jesus and His disciples to carry on the Godly work they started?
