Don’t Let the Election Choke You
What are we going to do about healthcare? What about terrorism? What about the economy, border security, the appointment of Supreme Court justices, energy independence, climate change, foreign policy, education, crime, taxes, minimum wage, heroin addiction, military strength, racism, and our crushing federal debt? These issues splatter the news, presidential debates, and social media. Many are in panic mode — even Christians. But Jesus warned us about things that choke us to death spiritually. He called them “the worries of the world.” “These are the ones who have heard the word, but the worries of the world…enter in and choke the word, and it becomes unfruitful.” (Mark 4:18b-19).
It’s okay to be prayerfully concerned, it’s okay to vote, but let’s not panic or worry. Satan loves to distract us. He wants us far more focused on this earth than Heaven, far more concerned about politics than our souls, far more pro-America than pro-God’s kingdom. “Set your mind on things above, not on the things that are on earth.” (Colossians 3:2). I know these are scary times, but this world is not our home brethren. “For our citizenship is in heaven, from which also we eagerly wait for a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ.” (Philippians 3:20). As long as our hearts agonize over and fixate on finding an earthly savior, we’re choking out the real Savior’s work in our lives. Let’s just live by faith and let Him reign. (Revelation 19:16)
