Glad it was Awkward

I went to the “Spirit” Halloween store and the cashier asked if I’d like to give a dollar to charity. “Sure,” I said.  Then, she gave me a big sticker to sign and place on a bulletin board for all to see.  Awkward.  While signing this thing, I thought of Jesus’ words: “When you give to the poor, do not sound a trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, so that they will be honored by men.  But when you give to the poor, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your giving will be in secret; and your Father who sees what is done in secret will reward you.” (Matthew 6:2-4).

I signed it “Brian” so it was vague.  Besides, it’s not like I was going to walk up to customers and say, “See that sticker?  That’s from my generous $1.00 donation — that’s right, I am awesome!”  But then it got worse.  She asked me to ring a cow bell for the whole store to hear!  Awkward.  I did it, trying to convince myself, “This isn’t about me, they just want to celebrate victory for the charity.”  Afterwards, it still felt like I sounded a trumpet as the hypocrites do.  Here’s my point.  I’m glad that was awkward for me.  Would it be awkward for you, or do you jump at chances to let people know how generous you are?
