Don’t Worry about Michal
When God blessed David with a tremendous victory over the Jebusites and the privilege of bringing the ark to Jerusalem, David was ecstatic! “David was dancing before the LORD with all his might.” (2 Sam. 6:14). David leapt and whirled around like a child who just met Mickey at Disney! But he’s the king! Isn’t he supposed to be serious and somber? How undignified! His wife Michal rebuked him for embarrassing himself. “How the king of Israel has distinguished himself today!” David’s response? “I will celebrate before the Lord, and I will be even more lightly esteemed than this!” (6:21-22a).
David didn’t care what she thought. He was too busy praising and rejoicing in “the King of Glory” (Psalm 24:7-10). As Christians, we ought to be leaping with joy over our Savior Jesus Christ! There will be Michal’s in our lives who think we’re embarrassing ourselves for being so joyful, but who cares? We’re celebrating the King of Glory both in our daily lives and in worship together! I’m certainly not suggesting we dance in worship services, but don’t confuse “decently and in order” (1 Cor. 14:40) with “stiff and emotionless.” Nonsense! Let’s say with David, “I will celebrate before the Lord!”
