Spiritual Lessons from the North Korea Summit
Last week President Trump and North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un met in Singapore to begin discussions about the denuclearization of North Korea. Thousands place trust and hopes on the outcome of this historic summit; thousands are crippled by fear. We must never forget: God is in control! How, then, should we react to the North Korea summit?
1. Trust in the Lord, not in man.
No President can guarantee America’s safety. Presidents are human; God is divine. “Do not trust in princes, in mortal man, in whom there is no salvation” (Psa. 146:3).
In addition, sin tends to corrupt those in power to the point they forsake their integrity. Such men cannot be trusted. “How blessed is the man who has made the Lord his trust, and has not turned to the proud, nor to those who lapse into falsehood” (Psa. 40:4).
2. Trust in the Lord, not in military might.
If North Korea fails to cooperate with the new agreement and the U.S. resorts to conflict, officials assure victory because our military is the strongest on earth. What arrogance!
“The king is not saved by a mighty army; a warrior is not delivered by great strength. A horse is a false hope for victory; nor does it deliver anyone by its great strength. Behold, the eye of the Lord is on those who fear Him, on those who hope for His lovingkindness” (Psa. 33:16-18). Let us affirm with David, “Some boast in chariots and some in horses, but we will boast in the name of the Lord, our God” (Psa. 20:7).
3. Trust in the Lord, not in manmade wisdom.
At the conclusion of the summit, the two leaders signed a document that guarantees North Korea’s commitment to moving towards denuclearization. What a relief—we’ve got it all figured out now!
No so fast.
God has it all figured out. Our plans will only succeed if God allows them to. Otherwise, they’ll fall flat. “Unless the Lord builds the house, they labor in vain who build it” (Psa. 127:1).
Hopefully and prayerfully Kim Jong Un will indeed denuclearize North Korea. Regardless, we have nothing to fear because God is in control. “In God I have put my trust, I shall not be afraid. What can man do to me?” (Psa. 56:11).
