A Compass, not a Map
A Compass, not a Map
When Habakkuk was frustrated by God’s calendar, he put his faith in God’s character. Like Habakkuk, we often want God to map out His every move for us, but God doesn’t promise a map. Instead, He provides the compass of His character. If we “live by faith” (Hab. 2:4) in His character and “be silent” before Him (Hab. 2:20), we’ll be far more interested in who we’re becoming than what God is doing. In the book “Diligently Seeking God,” Gary Henry writes:
“God is not obligated to explain everything to our satisfaction. ‘He has made everything beautiful in its time. Also He has put eternity in their hearts, such that no one can find out the work that God does from beginning to end.’ (Ecc. 3:11). Some things are, to be quite candid, none of our business. What God has revealed to us, however, is the truth about His character, His heart, and His values. He patiently waits for us to become more interested in these things and less interested in specific scenarios. ‘You’re wanting a map,’ He says, ‘but I’m trying to give you a Compass.’”
In the end, it doesn’t matter where God takes us in this life; only that He’s the one taking us there.
