Marriage Challenge: Be a Better Listener

Marriage Challenge: Be a Better Listener

Many spouses are terrible listeners. They pretend to listen to their spouse while their mind is occupied on other things. Or they interrupt their spouse and disagree without first coming to an understanding of what was being said. We all have room for improvement in this area.

For the next two weeks, set the goal of being a better listener in your marriage. Try to listen to your spouse with laser focus. Do your best to ignore distractions and to not think about your response while your spouse is talking to you. In addition, make comments that show you are interested in what they’re saying, and summarize what they in your response. If you do this, your spouse will know you truly care about them and understand what they are saying.

“But everyone must be quick to hear, slow to speak and slow to anger.”

-James 1:19b
