The Cure for Obliviousness
The Cure for Obliviousness
In Malachi, God’s people were oblivious to their sin. They asked God things like, “How have we despised Your name?” (1:6), “How have we defiled You?” (1:7), “For what reason are you not accepting our offerings?” (2:14), and “How have we robbed You?” (3:8). Isn’t it true we’re typically blind to our own faults? One of my favorite things about the Bible is that God shows me my blind spots! It’s painful, but I need God to tell me when I’m dishonoring Him so I can correct it.
James compares God’s Word to a mirror that shows us who we are (James 1:23-24). It’s never pleasant to look in the mirror and find a piece of spinach in my teeth, but I’d rather know than be oblivious so I don’t make a fool of myself! Wouldn’t you? The people in Malachi’s day were oblivious because they lost touch with God’s Law. They weren’t looking in the spiritual mirror until Malachi came and showed them the problem! When the Bible exposes our sin, it may make us feel ashamed. But it’s better to be temporarily ashamed and eternally blessed than temporarily oblivious and eternally cursed. Praise be to God for His Word: the cure for obliviousness!
