The Love of Christ in Action
Police officer Amber Guyger was just sentenced to 10 years in prison for murdering her neighbor, Botham Jean. She went to the wrong apartment, thought he was an intruder, and killed him. He was only 26 years old and a fellow Christian in the Lord’s church.
It was infuriating and heartbreaking. But a few weeks ago, Botham’s 18-year-old brother Brandt spoke to Amber in court. He said, “I know if you go to God and ask Him, He will forgive you. I love you just like anyone else and I’m not going to hope you rot and die…I don’t even want you to go to jail. I want the best for you because I know that’s exactly what Botham would want for you. Give your life to Christ. I think giving your life to Christ is the best thing Botham would want for you.” Then he begged the judge to let him give Amber a hug. The district attorney said in 37 years, he’d never seen anything like it. That’s the love of Christ which surpasses all knowledge (Ephesians 3:19). As I reflect, I think if Brandt can forgive his brother’s killer, surely we can “forgive each other, just as God in Christ also has forgiven you.” (Ephesians 4:32b)
