Fight the Vacation Drift
Fight the Vacation Drift
“For this reason we must pay much closer attention to what we have heard, so that we do not drift away from it.” (Hebrews 2:1). The Hebrews drifted because of persecution, but sometimes pleasure causes the drift. Vacations can feel like drifting down a lazy river of pleasure and ease. Rest is good for us, but not when our Christianity drifts too.
It’s easy to drift from Bible reading. Who wants to read anything serious on vacation? It’s easy to drift from prayer. Who has time to pray with so many fun distractions? It’s easy to drift from worship. Who wants to give up sleeping in? Interestingly, sabbath rest in Scripture was always God-centered. “If because of the Sabbath, you turn your foot from doing your own pleasure on My holy day…and honor it, desisting from your own ways and seeking your own pleasure and speaking your own word, then you will take delight in the Lord…” (Isaiah 58:13-14a). Let’s fight the vacation drift this year by inviting the Lord into our vacation. Throughout the day, let’s praise Him for vacation and for true rest in Christ, let’s ask Him for strength not to compromise, let’s read Psalms of joy, and sing in our cheerfulness (James 5:13)! It’ll make it sweeter, more fulfilling, and it’ll help fight the vacation drift!
