10 Spiritual Goals for 2020
To grow spiritually as we should, we need to set specific goals. If we aim for nothing, we’ll hit it every time! Following are ten goals for the new year that will help us attain new spiritual heights.
1. Regular Attendance
God commands us to make a habit of attending worship services because doing so aids our spiritual walk in a practical way (Heb. 10:24-25). We should all make up our minds to “go to church” as often as we possibly can in 2020.
2. Personal Bible Study
Personal Bible study is necessary to gain a better understanding of the truth so we can discern between good and evil (Heb. 5:14) and be equipped to fight the battles life presents us (Eph. 6:17).
3. Personal Prayer
We must make time for prayer because it enables us to attain oneness with God (Psa. 69:18). It also provides peace, produces strength, opens doors of opportunity, and helps reduce anxiety and stress (Matt. 7:7; Phil. 4:6-7)
4. Meditation
In addition to prayer, we should set aside time to meditate on God, His Word, His Son, and His reward (Psa. 63:6; Phil. 4:8). This is a great way to set our mind on things above (Col. 3:2).
5. Join a Small Group
Small groups provide a family-like atmosphere that helps us grow closer to one another and to the Lord (Acts 2:46). We should all make a personal commitment to join the House to House Groups each time they’re offered this year.
6. Serve Others
Serving others is central to becoming Christlike (John 13:12-17). Set a goal this year to proactively "do good to all people, and especially to those who are of the household of the faith” (Gal. 6:10).
7. Reach the Lost
Planting the seed of God’s word in people’s hearts can play a role in the salvation of their souls (1 Cor. 3:6-7). This year, make a conscious effort to share God’s word with the lost more than you have in the past.
8. Memorize Scripture
Memorizing scripture is a wonderful way to “let the word of Christ richly dwell within you” (Col. 3:16). Most brethren never do this because they never try. I encourage you not to make that mistake in 2020.
9. Listen to Online Sermons and Podcasts
If you replace much of what you listen to on your devices with spiritual messages, you’ll stay much more encouraged and more focused on the Lord throughout the week.
10. Find a Mentor
Mentors can drastically help you improve your character and stay motivated (Prov. 27:17; Eccl. 4:9-12). Make a goal this year to reach out to a Christian you respect so you can learn from them.
I hope and pray that God will strengthen us all to “grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ” this year (2 Pet. 3:18). Setting these ten goals and acting on them will help us do just that.
